Visit the free open lecture about electronics using the electron spin in nano-engineered thin films on June 30th at High Tech Campus Eindhoven.

Our modern society aks for disruptively new solutions. In his presentation prof. dr. Bert Koopmans will discuss answers provided by nanoelectronics that makes explicit use of the quantum mechanical spin of electrons in combination with engineering magnetic thin films at the atomic scale.

About the Lecture

Our modern society heavily relies on ever increasing data capacity, Internet bandwidth, connectivity and computational power for business, entertainment, safety and communications. The explosively rising energy consumption of ICT processes, problems with on-chip heat management, desire for 3D-architectures and trends like “the Internet of things”, ask for disruptively new solutions. In this presentation I will discuss answers provided by nanoelectronics that makes explicit use of the quantum mechanical spin of electrons in combination with engineering magnetic thin films at the atomic scale. At present, such ‘spintronic’ technology is already used in the read head of everyone’s HDD, but first magnetic memory chips (MRAM) have become available as well, while racetrack memories, based on current-driven motion of magnetic bits through 3D architectures of magnetic nanowires are being envisioned. Developments have been fuelled by recent scientific discoveries in which seemingly subtle effects like the so-called spin-Hall effect and chiral spin textures turn out to be major players. All of this will be explained at a tutorial level, and will be put in an application perspective, ranging from sensors for automotive, via nanoparticles for biomedical technology towards high data-rate transfer of information between the magnetic and photonic domain.
